Joints that protect the masonry without trapping damaging moisture

Traditional masonry depends on mortar joints that accommodate movement and allow moisture to evaporate. Hard, dense or cracked cement-rich pointing can force moisture through the stone edges, contributing to accelerated decay and loss of the original arrises.

Restorex assesses the masonry, exposure, joint width and existing materials before selecting the mortar and finish. Defective joints are removed with controlled tools and care around fragile arises; new mortar is placed and compacted in suitable lifts, then protected while it cures.

The mortar colour, aggregate, texture and joint profile are agreed to complement the building. Repointing is not treated as a cosmetic coating: isolated sound historic joints can be retained, and underlying water-entry defects should be corrected as part of the programme.

Frequently asked questions

Lime pointing and repointing Edinburgh FAQs

Why use lime rather than cement?

An appropriate lime mortar is generally more compatible with traditional porous masonry because it accommodates movement and supports moisture evaporation.

Does every joint need to be raked out?

No. Sound compatible mortar should normally be retained. The scope should target defective, open or inappropriate joints.

Can lime pointing be done in winter?

Temperature, wind, rain and frost affect curing. Work must be programmed and protected around suitable conditions.
